Record Setting TX Bass Tournament

Everyone is talking about the Bassmasters Classic at Toho this year, but maybe we should be looking at the first tournament stop of the Elite Series.....

Bass Champs just held a one day tournament where the winner had 5 bass for 39.66 lbs, those are the kind of numbers over 4 days that could break Dean Roja's record.  30th Place had 5 fish for 20.48 lbs and did not cash a check.  That is just plain unbelievable!

On a positive not, I just recently booked airline tickets to spend 4 days on Amistad in early March, during the Basssmasters Elite Series Tournament.  I plan to post observation of the tournament as well my quest for lunker bass.

Hi Rich, nice job on the website. Is this part of what they mentioned you were working on at the Fed meeting?

I'm interested in seeing some interviews with pros who do well in regional tournemnts.

For instance, your excellent finish at last years TOC. Talk about your process prefishing and a little about your decisions during the two days.

Maybe you could interview the fellow that won too.

    Just some ideas.

    Good fishin,

      Hey Ron,

This not part of my State Fed responsibility, this is my own creation and initiative.  I had not thought about going historical, but since you asked I can put some notes down about the 2005 MN TOC.

Going into the tournament I had a good pattern cranking outside edges of weedlines with a Rapala DT-6, I had did not have an really particular spots, but I had several good areas or stretched of weedlines that produced well.  I felt as long as I kept rotating though those areas, I would have a shot.  I also identified about 3 or 4 shallow areas that were holding better fish (fish over 2lbs, which were scarce).  So my game plan was to fish my areas with a crankbait until I had a decent limit and then I would try to cull on in the shallows.

I got a pretty early draw on day 1 and one of my of shallow areas was open, so I ran there and was fortunate to catch my limit there on Topwater & crankbaits.  I did not spend much time cranking that day and fished shallow, culled a couple times.  At the same time it was very frustrating, because I probably hooked and lost more weight than I brought to the scales.

Day 2 there were several boats in my Day 1 starting spot, so hit a quick reed patch and boated 2 fish.  I then moved out on the weedlines caught 3 fish including a 3# fish.  I hit one more area around noon & culled two fish.  We then spent the rest of the day trying to get my partner fish as I new I  had enough weight to make the top 12 and I wanted my buddy to qualify.  He got his limit, but proved to be not enough and I let him catch 2 nice keepers of my areas that would have really helped me since I finished in 2nd by .12 lbs, ouch.  Oh well, had I known it was that close....

Hope you found this informational & interesting
