More Chatterbait Options....
Looks like Rad Lures' competition gets stiffer day by day. Venom Lures now has a new Chatterbait style lure called the Venom Rattle Shake. If I order some of these, maybe I will get them before MN Bass Opener......

It seems pretty similar to the Rad Lures Chatterbait and the Fishin Magician Voo-Doo. I have no idea which is better, or if there is any difference between any of them. If they all do work, its good, because there is such a demand for them, they are almost impossible to get. I would welcome any info anyone had on any of these baits and the successes or non-success that they have had.

I hope the Venom lures work. I tried a chatterbait 3/8oz in chart/white at a lake in southern Indiana this past saturday. I only had one small bass with it. Did better on red Bandits. Still can't wait to try the chatterbaits some more. The lure has tremendous action.

Thanks for the Chatterbait feedback. What are the conditions like in south IN right now? Pre-Spawn? Are you fishing Patoka?

Gambler Swim Blades are on SALE at Basspro.com
Also, for those of you still waiting for Chatterbaits that you ordered from Rad Lures, the end may be in sight. I got an email from Rad Lures today, basically outlining the fact that they have gotten some manufacturing support and backorders should be filled soon. See Email:
Rad Lure® News Flash!!!!!
Important Chatterbait(tm) Update for our Customers
As of April 24, 2006, we received great news from our corporate offices and wanted to share it with our customers immediately. The large shipment we have been expecting will arrive in our warehouse in approximately three weeks. At that time, we expect to fill all of our existing orders. This will be followed by a second shipment which will allow us to build inventory to fill new orders.
We want to thank each and every one of you for your patience and understanding during a time of such tremendous growth for our company. We are certain that you will be glad you waited for our product. Not only have we enhanced the Chatterbait(tm) by increasing its strength, but we also plated the stainless steel blade with sterling silver or 22 k gold. This improves the reflectivity of the blade over the original finish with the prismatic decal.
Please be sure to visit our website regularly for new product offerings. In the next few months, we will be introducing an assortment of colors and sizes as well as entirely new products to keep you on the forefront of fishing with Rad Lure. We want to make sure you won't have any, "the one that got away" stories!
Thanks and happy fishing!!

I just cannot keep up with all the new chatter style baits that just keep rolling out, so here is the latest. V&M is rolling out its Cyclone Lightning Blade and Venom is producing a Rattle Shake Kit which allows you to turn any of your old skirted jigs into a chatter-type-bait. As of now, I have the Gamber, Rad Lures, Venom & V&M chatterbaits on order and I hope to review them and give feedback on all of them. Based on performance, vibration, durability, quality, etc.

Got my Cyclone Lightning Blades in the mail on Friday. I ordered them from
LandBigFish.com on Sunday and got them in less than a week. Might be a good bet for those of you waiting to get your hands on some chatter style baits. As soon as I get some other styles, I will start to review and compare.

And now half my Gambler Swim Blades have arrived from Basspro.com. Now if my Rattle Shakes & Rad Lure Chatterbaits would arrive, I could give an honest comparison. None the lesst the Cyclone & Gambler baits will see some real world testing this weekend

I called bass pro and looked on line, but B.P.S. says they don't carry the gambler swim blade.

That is interesting, they must have sold out or got too far behind on backorders and removed them from the system. I ordered 4 a couple weeks ago, my two bluegill colored baits showed up in a week or so and the white ones were backordered. You can still find them on LandBigFish.com, I just checked this morning!

Just a reminder for all of the rubber worm fisher people. When you have texas rigged a worm and caught a good fish and it has torn your worm. Don't throw it away. Keep it in a separate baggie and use them wacky style. I have been doing this for years even before I had heard of anyone else using wacky style. The other night I caught seven nice bass, the biggest about 3 1/2lbs, on a used Yum worm. It makes for some savings and is a lot of fun.

Greg,
Great tip, you can also just bite or break off the first half inch and usually get a few more fish out if it texas rigged, sometimes the cover does not always permit wacky rigging....

I bought two of the the "orignal" chatterbaits in black/blue and white/chart (my confidence colours). Will be giving them a go when the season opens on the 24th.

White/Chart has been pretty succesful here in MN, let us know how it goes with your new Chatterbaits. Where does Bass season not open until June 24th? I want to make sure I never accept a job that relocates me there

Widespread in Ontario, Canada basically, but I'm from the Niagara region...See what happens.

Well, after giving a good work out, my tally is in. 1 small pike and 1 decent rock bass. All my largies and smallies were on tubes...possibly from the slight cold front that passed through.
The only way to get that frantic side to side action is to rip it in quickly. Otherwise it feels like a lipless crankbait with the fast vibration.
Seems like a good lure though....just have to catch my first real bass on it...or did the pike curse it?

That is what is great about Rockies, they hit everything

I used my origanal chatterbait (brand) brown with gold blade and have not had much luck any Ideas as to where when and any tricks there might be to throwing them.
Reply to this
I can honestly say that I have not set the world on fire with them either. I have not caught much on brown, but have not thrown as much. I have seen and/or heard about guys doing better with Chart/White and Black baits. I would tend to try over vegetation and in low light conditions (dawn, dusk, clouds, rain, etc) and also on where you have wind on banks or flats. I belive it is much like a spinnerbait, where when you have soemthing like wind or lowlight conditions, it makes the bait harder to see and the fish more aggressive.
Hope this helps,
Rich

i was using a black and blue chatterbait a few saturdays ago and i cought the biggest bass i ever caught. it was about 5 lbs. at least 18" long. i was retreiving the chatterbait slow. this was the first time to use the lure so i am not sure if i was doing it right. but i am looking at buying the pro kit and trying as many of them as i can. if someone could let me know how fast or slow it would be helpful.

Robert,
Nice bass! Good questions on the chatterbait. I am not an expert on the chatterbait, I have caught only a few fish on it, but that is probably due to lack of casts
My initial thoughts are that the best retrieve will vary from day to day and even lake to lake based on water and weather conditions. Just like a spinnerbait or a rattletrap, sometime you catch more fish burning them and sometimes you reel them so slow they barely stay off the bottom. I would experiment every time you go out and let the fish tell you what they want that day. Maybe one day its a steady retrieve and other days you need to pause it or periodically twitch your rod tip to add erratic action.
The few fish I have caught have come on a moderately steady retrieve. Maybe some other readers can add their input......
Hope this helps,
Rich

Chatterbait heads-up!
I was fishing a tourney in Kentucky Lake several months ago. I was fishing a chatterbait around some docks and shallow shady areas. I hooked a monster! She hit so hard she vaulted several feet out of the water with the chatterbait in her mouth. After 2 or 3 violent head shakes the chatterbait came sailing right back at me!
I had to duck to keep from getting hit in the face with the lure. Loosing that bass cost me alot of money that day. She was well over 7 pounds. That night, after the tourney, I sat down and examined the bait. Low and behold! Guess what I found. The jig and hook had been put on the bait upside down!! With the blade in the proper position, the hook point was facing down. That is exactly why I lost that huge bass. She was probably hooked in the lower lip. If the jig had been turned "hook-up", she probably wouldn't have been able to throw the hook so easily. I have since checked several commercially made chatterbaits. Beware!! More than half of them had the jig put on upside down! Bottom line: check your chatterbaits. Make sure the hook is pointed up. Otherwise you may loose the fish of a lifetime!

Great info, I also noticed that sometime the jig will just fly off and detach from the blade just casting, I could not imagine when a fish hits. Check your Chatterbaits carefully.....

I have been catching a few fish on the original chatterbait but had three get off at the boat yesterday. It seems bass are throwing this lure more than anything I have ever used. What can I do in the future to prevent this ?
Reply to this
One thing I have noticed with the original chatterbait, is that the hooks are a heavy wire and not that sharp. Chances are you are not getting very good hook penetration and that is why you are losing fish. Here a few things that can help with this problem:
Take a hook hone & sharpen the hook
Add a trailer hook like you would to a spinnerbait or buzzbait
Fish on heavier line or braided line
Fish on heavier 7 foot long rod
Fish on a high speed burner reel so that you can catch up to fish swimming towards you on the bite
Any combination of a few of these to all of them will help you land more bass on your chatter jigs!
